Coming Soon: Musicport
In a time when it's getting increasingly difficult to bring world class acts to the UK from all around the world, it's enormously encouraging that despite these problems, a relatively small town on the North Yorkshire coastline continues to do just that, to bring together for a weekend of celebration, some of the finest names in music across the world.
Musicport is a not-for-profit community business, which started back in 2000 with a one-off festival for the Millennium, and that one-off has led to no less than eighteen more. Over those years the festival has seen appearances by everyone from The Mahotella Queens, Seckou Keita and Catrin Finch, Rachid Taha, The Buena Vista Social Club, Toumani Diabate, Misty In Roots, Courtney Pine, Talvin Singh, Hugh Masekela, Dub Colossus, Transglobal Underground and Varldens Band to Idlewild, The Levellers, Richard Hawley, Chumbawamba, Arthur Brown, The Blockheads, The Demon Barbers XL and Duke Special.
It's not just about the concerts though, which are spread over at least three stages, there's also open mics, music sessions for under fives, masterclasses and workshops for young musicians, and a whole programme of workshops covering a multitude of skills and interests. You can even earn an Arts Award with Musicport.
The central hub in the main cafe/bar area of the Whitby Pavilion is a great place to relax and enjoy a beer or a coffee, whilst perusing your programme, chatting to friends and listening to the choice cuts played by some of the best DJs in the country, before going off to see one of your favourite bands or artists a short walk away. Rain or shine, Musicport is a fantastic place to be for community spirit, friendship and of course, the music.
