Coming Up: Martin Hayes Quartet

Howard Assembly Room, Leeds
Saturday 27 January 2018

Violinist Martin Hayes' soulful interpretations of traditional Irish music are recognised the world over for their exquisite musicality and irresistible rhythm, coming to new prominence as the traditional heart of Irish supergroup The Gloaming.

He has toured and recorded with guitarist Dennis Cahill for over twenty years, and has collaborated with other extraordinary musicians including Bill Frisell and Jordi Savall.

The Martin Hayes Quartet expands on the musical ideas of Hayes and Cahill, with the melody still central, by exploring sonic possibilities with the inclusion of the deep mellow sound of the bass clarinet, played by the virtuosic Doug Wieselman, and the rich warm tones of the viola, played by the brilliant Liz Knowles.

Their ability to convey the relevancy of an old form and play it with such emotion and urgency, has made them the undisputed masters of Irish music around the world.

The great fiddler Martin Hayes speaks with the soul of a poet. A remarkable artist, the only one of his type.
