If you don't remember the thoroughly engaging reggae version of Nina Simone's gospel-tinged hit To Be Young Gifted and Black in 1970, then you simply weren't there that's for sure. Bob and Marcia, the Jamaican duo made up of Bob Andy and Marcia Griffiths, took the song to number 5 in March of that year and it was a hit on dance floors up and down the country. Sadly, the duo had already bowed out of the music business by the middle of the decade. Like most of the singles I choose for the Singled Out series, it only takes a couple of seconds after the needle hits the groove, when I’m back there, in this case attired in my prized Levi Stay Pressed trousers and green gingham Ben Sherman shirt.
