Sometimes a song comes along that completely knocks you off your feet. Robert Wyatt had been on my radar since his Soft Machine days and the Canterbury Scene in general. Anyone who could get himself kicked out of one band and then name the next band Matching Mole, a French derivative of Soft Machine, was already in my book of heroes. Clive Langer and Elvis Costello’s song was originally intended to be released as a four track EP, with four versions of the same song, performed by different singers and Wyatt's version quickly rose to the top of the pile and was immediately released as a single in its own right. Written during the Falklands War, the single didn't become a hit until the first anniversary of the conflict.
