Despite an early taste for rock music in the late 1960s as a school kid, I was always impressed with the songs released on the Tamla Motown record label, even today, still the only interesting music played at family parties and the only music I will dance to. Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland were responsible for writing many of the classic songs for the Motown label and many of its subsidiary labels in the 1960s and Heaven Must Have Sent You was one of them. The Elgins, featuring the voice of Saundra Edwards, first released the song in 1966 and it enjoyed some chart success over in the United States. As the popularity of Motown grew over here in the UK, the record was reissued in 1971 and reached number 3 in the singles charts. The song remains one of a handful of songs that I think of automatically whenever I hear the words Tamla Motown.
