Isaac Hayes - Theme From Shaft (Stax STXS2010 - 1971)

At a time when I was utterly consumed with rock music by the likes of Deep Purple, Grand Funk Railroad, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, in fact anything to blot out the infantile bubblegum music I was hearing on daytime radio, I inadvertently stumbled upon soul music purely by accident when I heard Isaac Hayes' Theme From Shaft on the radio and was instantly drawn to the funky arrangement. I soon had the double soundtrack LP on long-term loan from a friend who worked in a local hardware store and became a fan not only of Isaac Hayes, but other artists on the Stax label, such as Otis Redding, Booker T and the MGs and Sam and Dave amongst others. I didn't see the film for which the music was composed until much later, when I instantly recognised much of the incidental music accompanying the action, most iconically, the sixteenth note hi-hat ride pattern, played by Willie Hall.
