Peter Gabriel - Games Without Frontiers (Charisma CB354 - 1980)

Peter Gabriel was well into his solo career after leaving Genesis, when he scored with this, his biggest hit so far. Lifted from his third self-titled album, with a slight change to what might be perceived as offensive lyrics, Games Without Frontiers, was a comment on the futility of war, comparing it with the popular multi-national TV game show Jeux Sans Frontières, known in the UK as It's a Knock Out, where countries competed with each other dressed in ridiculous outfits whilst presenters provided hysterical laughter. With Kate Bush adding her distinctive voice to the song, together with a whistled chorus provided by Gabriel himself along with producers Steve Lillywhite and Hugh Padgham, the song's jaunty vibe guaranteed its place in the top ten back in 1980.
