Stephen Stills - Stephen Stills (Atlantic 2401004)

The voice of Stephen Stills was just about everywhere in the late 1960s and early 1970s, not only the voice of Buffalo Springfield and one third of the three part harmonies supplied by Crosby Stills Nash, later augmented by Neil Young, but also as a solo performer throughout the 1970s. The cover shot of Stills playing a Martin guitar in the snow is now remembered as an iconic cover shot, yet the music on the LP betrays that image with a much rockier sound. Stills was noted for his own electric guitar playing and his debut solo LP holds the distinction of being the only album to feature the playing of both Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix, Clapton on Go Back Home and Hendrix on Old Times Good Times. However the thing that appealed to me most about Stephen Stills was not so much the hard rocking electric numbers, but the bluesy acoustic work on such songs as Black Queen.
