After hearing of the death of Canadian singer-songwriter and poet Leonard Cohen, I was startled to realise that I hadn't included a single album of his in my Vinyl Junkie series, save for Jennifer Warnes' Famous Blue Raincoat, which was number 152 in the series back in the spring of 2014. Leonard Cohen has played an important part in my listening habits over the last five decades, having first heard his song You Know Who I Am on the CBS double sampler LP Fill Your Head With Rock back in 1970. Leonard Cohen had a reputation at the time for being the spokesperson of the depressed and stories of wrist-slitting were rife in music circles around Doncaster at the time. It was shortly afterwards when I listened to the songs on his first LP and subsequent albums such as Songs From a Room released in 1969, that I discovered how wrong we had all been.
