Vera Van Heeringen - Standing Tall (Root Beat Records)

Star rating:
4

Familiar to anyone who has witnessed the hilarious antics of the New Rope String Band, multi-instrumentalist Vera Van Heeringen embarks on her solo recording career with her debut album STANDING TALL. The Dutch musician puts aside her flippers, skittles and deadpan expression in order to demonstrate another side to her varied talents, that of a fine and assured bluegrass player. With a dozen songs and tunes, each showcasing her chops as an informed flatpick guitar and mandolin player as well as being an expressive singer, Vera thoroughly deserves the kind words in the sleeve notes written by Tim O'Brien, who also contributes backing vocals on the exquisite His Own Way.

Co-produced with Andy Bell, Vera is joined by Andy Seward on double bass, Dave Proctor on mandolin and guitar, Dave Luke on electric guitar and mandolin, Jock Tyldesley on banjo and fiddle, Andy Watson on drums with further backing vocals courtesy of Louisa Jones. You will like this album when you hear it, then after a second listen, you'll like it even more.
